For me, I do like either the AGS's or the ACH. I live at higher elevation so I have never tried a gas (ACN) in a diesel.

The AGS is kind of neat as it gets to overdrive a bit earlier than the ACH. But, sometimes the ACH is fine in harder pulls or at elevation. I've never bothered to install a 0.71 5th either (even though I have two waiting) as the two (it and the 0.75) are so close to one another (in reality).

With the AGS, you sort of notice that 4th gear is a bit different in the first few minutes of driving. After that, the difference between the AGS and ACH no longer matters as they are really both very nice trans. If you have access to an AGS......put the grips on it as all this stuff is getting harder to find here south of the Canuck border.

I think an ACN gas trans might be a good thing in a stock Eco diesel (living in lower elevation) because the KKK 14 develops boost faster and tends to "fizzle out" so much sooner than my KKK 24 in one of the Golfs. For me (running stock boost with a KKK 24), I think I would find an ACN gas trans very aggravating waiting for the boost to finally arrive.

In closure (pant-pant), I think you will be a very happy guy with an AGS or ACH even if you decide to forego the 0.71. VW did a very great job in selection of the ratios. Just make sure to renew all your external trans seals and keep your trans nicely topped off with oil. I get so angry when guys boldly write in and say, " ....my 5th gear just 'went out' and I need one of you guys to sell me another one real cheap......" I always want to go for the field goal right in the middle of their backside!!!!

I've never detected a difference in fuel mileage between the ACH and AGS's. They're both winners. When I start using my Eco, the first thing I am going to do it to pull that AVX and sell it to the highest bidder!!!!

thanks for the input. I'm really trying to build a high mpg machine that can perform. a good balance between a long distance highway cruiser (that can actually keep up with traffic and also isn't noisy as heck when I'm goin 65 or above) with something that might be able little to go a little bit fast once in awhile. I do encounter some steep hills if I go out in the mountains south of me though compared to western states mountains they're more like hills. I do encounter some steep climbs that my n/a just doesn't like very much.

Does anyone know what the modern VW transmission ratios are, and if those trans will bolt to the older engines? Knowing VW, the stuff probably bolts together. I think VW only does a 5 speed in the new Jettas. VW does do a 6 speed, but I didn't see those listed in the new Jetta's. I've often wondered about building a very high geared 6 speed trans as well. Something where 6th gear would be like .5 overdrive and you could possibly only use the gear for higher highway speeds, or when very little throttle is used. Just thinking over the years is all. Anyone with input?
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

02A tranny CTN====3.778=2.118=1.360=1.029=0.755=Jetta/Golf/Passat TDI 3.157= final drive
This will bolt right up to a 1.6 but has a hydraulic clutch so foot peddles a slave cylinder are also needed. 2200rpm at 60mph. The only 6 speed I've heard of is a after market one that you have to supply a tranny and they add the 6th gear to it.

Bbob: I got to thinking, there is sort of an alternative with the Eco transmision: you can run 185/65 - 14 tires on 6 inch VW alloy rims (like bottlecaps or teardrops) and that will give you about 1 inch taller tire over a 185/60 - 14 (standard size). Essentually, this would probably bring the final ratio closer to like, say, a 4.05 or something like that.

I currently have bottlecaps (14 inch tall 6 inch wide stock wheel on '85 GTI Golf) with this taller tire on the front of a newly rebuilt 100 horse gas engine in an '86 Golf. It is a difference which is actually felt (in regards to gearing). They really don't look any different than the shorter tire and don't seem to do anything negative to the handling. Or, I suppose you could run 185/80-13's and get somewhat the same effect....although the 80 series 13's tend to start looking visually taller. And....a bit geeky looking as well!

I've actually got a couple of photos of my '87 GTI with teardrops and this taller 14 inch tire if you need to see what they look like. I prefer taller stuff....never been into this whole dysfunctional "lowered thing" as we have a lot of racoons and vagrants out here and they tend to dent my exhaust pipes and such!!!!!
