Starting swap today..

Post by steevz »

Alright, I got a Mint 92 Golf, 2 dr. It's a gas/automatic and starting swapping it for a 1.6TD.

So, the 92 has power steering my 85 obviously didn't. In the processing of deleting it, would you swap the steering racks? What's the best way to change that out?

i left my PS rack in when i deleted my PS... that was 110K miles ago. i really like the feel of the steering at speed with the non-powered PS rack tho it is heavy at low speed.

i can literally 'feel' the slipperiness of the road with my current setup.

Well, if I have the manual rack.. may as well just swap it out then don't have to buy the loop and wait for shipping. :P

Thanks though.

You'll have to do an alignment when you're done swapping racks. You're choice.

one benefit of using a power rack as manual is a shorter turning radius than the manual rack.

Oh yeah... forgot about that. So I can just plug the holes for now? I'll probably just try to make one of the PS delete loops when I get some time. Do you know the size of the nuts?

Great project to start with.
If you do want to swap in a manual rack,.. make sure you have the right "u-joint" that goes from the rack to the steering column and the different rubber boot.
They can be hard to find and spendy.

Alright, so far I have the gas engine out of the golf. Pulled all the sensors and computer wiring. Almost pulled the TD engine from my Jetta, just needs the shifter linkage removed from the transmission and I'll pull it out.

Anyone know the best place remove the linkage from on the tranny?

Just going to keep the PS rack and relieve some pressure and loop it. Sounds like it works quite well.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to clean up the engine bay and get it ready for install.. I'm guessing doing the shifter linkage before dropping the engine in will be easiest. I'll probably just drop and swap fuel tanks and lines instead of trying to empty the tank and remove the pump, etc. Hoping to have the majority of everything done tomorrow. Wiring the TD looks pretty simple.. just going to get a push button switch for the glow plugs.

If anyone has any tips to throw my way, feel free! :)

I've found that if you try to leave most of the shifter linkage on the trans, it hangs up on the brake booster. You'll figure it out as you go though.

Trying to eliminate some work here.. I have a mk3 fuel tank removed from an AAZ.

Are mk3 and mk2 tank interchangeable..? wouldn't have to drop the tank off the Jetta this way.

EFF!! Oh MY GAWD!

NEVER would I wish pulling the damned pedal cluster on anyone!! And once I got it out, it's cracked! Right under where the clutch cable ride through that sleeve. Can I just JB weld it back together, or should I get it welded? Or does it have to be replaced?

Good time to find that is cracked.
I've had it happen on Rabbits but not on the MK2s/3s.

It's a good idea to remove the peddlecluster and have the weld reenforced so you don't have a problem after it's running.
It shouldn't cost much to have someone stick a few welds on it.
