I also found out, from everything I have seen anyway, that every completely brown wire in a VW is a ground. The only tough part is that after 20 plus years sometimes they all look brown.

I grounded the negative battery to the one larger brown wire I had cut-n-capped and also grounded the battery directly to the frame (battery box).....
and PRESTO.....
I have lights!!!!! (ok, so they stay on bright - I think it's the steering column switch)....but they are on!

Well.....I'm almost ready to give this one back to it's owner! Drove it last night for about 20 miles and no problems...well, orriginal issue oriented problems anyway (heater doesn't blow air and it could use some suspension work)....but the motor is running strong.
