Hi,
I have a 1991 mk2 td golf. I have recently rebuilt the head with new valves lifters etc.
Ive deleted the BOV by welding a cap and have turned the gov screw in a bit to increase power.
I have a standard garret t3 fitted. Ive installed a boost tap and gauge as well as fitting an egt gauge to the exhaust manifold.
I also upgraded the headgasket to the aaz metal gasket.
Car is running average, problems are with increased fuel at gov screw it smokes a lot! and is really hard to start. Im sure i would be able to remove some of the smoke if I was able to turn the boost up. The problem is no matter what I do it just wont go over like 9psi.
Every time you floor it it just wooshes out at 9-10psi.
Ive even tried blocking the outlet that goes from the turbo to the internal wastegate to give me full boost but nothing much changes.
Any help would be appreciated I love this car and cant afford to replace the turbo parts are hard to find in NZ and turbos are expensive. Really need to get this one to work!
Some of the work Ive done so far.

Intake doesn't look restricted,.. hot about the exhaust?
Have you messed with timing?
Move it a pencil line and test drive.

Re: MK2 TD Garret T3 Problems
did you have issues before your work or did you introduce them?
my t3 does the same boost with stock setup.
my car is eating lots of oil though and lots of blowby smoke as well
i fiddled with my lda settings and was amazed to see the difference you could make. i recently got it to stop the cloud on the high end of boost. but i could leave a trail until. also my car was starting to leave blowby smoke idling.
if your pump and all that are sound it sounds like your timing is off at the least. my tired engine would still start in the cold with one cycle of glowplugs and a few seconds of cranking

Re: MK2 TD Garret T3 Problems
I looked through your other pictures and saw that the pistons had made valve contact... I'm assuming broken timing belt?
After you rebuilt the head, did you do a compression test? Low compression could account for hard starting.

No I did'nt do a compression test after the head rebuild.
Yes cambelt went and had the head rebuilt. So should I do a compression test then what?
If its low on one or more does that mean pistons? seen as the head is basically all new.
Also any idea on why my turbo wont boost past 9psi?

Re: MK2 TD Garret T3 Problems
might be piston damage , but might also have bent the rods a bit... that throws the timing out and could cause the smoke and hard starts.

Does not sound awesome! Can I remove the pistons through the sump? to check or do I have to take the head off again?
Does anyone have a walkthrough guide to removing sump and checking conrods etc?
