im still having a hell of a time getting the cam sprocket loose i made a puller. it worked great on the i/p sprocket not so good on the cam sprocket i had it torqued down good and the sucker still wont loosen up. i even put a piece of wood as a buffer and smacked it with a hammer good and solid all four directions.

One tap from a brass or rubber mallet is all it takes me. IIRC a puller will not work for that type of press fit.

Why will a puller not work? I'd say they work better on a tapered fit . There is no dragging through corrosion/contamination, unlike a parallel fit

You may be able to try to head up the pully and get wax to melt into the pully/shaft joint and get it to come loose this way. However, I don't know how hot you can get the pully before something happens to it, or if it'll damage the seal behind it. THen there's the other option, bring it to a mechanic. They'll probably have it off in a couple minutes. They do things like that more often than we do.

Im gonna get a bigger hammer and improve the pulley design.

Next question is this front crankbolt. The forums say replace.. all the vw shops in town say reuse it.. not a problem at all they say. biggest reason being i have to wait to get it either way whether i order it from here or order it from the stealership.

Are those front bolts available? If my memory is correct, they aren't. I replaced the front main seal on ole 82 a year ago and I just loctite'd the old bolt back in.

The older hex bolts are no longer available. The newer TDI 12pt stretch type bolt is available and not reusable.

The older design is technically reusable, but if you have to remove the old I would put the new in. Make sure to get a good hold on it as IIRC the torque for the 12pt bolt is 140lbs plus 1/4 turn? I could be off go with what the bolt/book says, but I know you cannot just grab the crank and twist it easily.

I've never replaced the crank bolt. Just my .02 cents.

Nah, just saying. I've had 5, I've had the crank bolt out of all of them, and I've never replaced it. ;) In fact, on my 84 with a 12mm engine, when the head gasket was done, the old bolts were used, and the torque/1/2 turn crap was just reduced some. Worked great, Put 200k miles on it before it blew out again.

I've never separated the two while in the car, and when I've had to do anything motor mount wise and pull the engine, I've always pulled them as a pair. It's easier to separate and attach the two while out, and not a whole lot more work to get both of them out at the same time.

finally got around to getting the engine out of the non turbo car. got it pulled in about 5 hours late last night. First question is how much bend can the speedo cable handle before getting trashed forgot to remove it before I started ja king up the motor seems ok just wanted some input. second question how do I remove the gear on the speedo cable? what is the second wire on my ip? there's the fuel stop but there was another single post connector with a wire on it.. something to do with the altitude comp system? could I use that wire to power the air warmer thing that's on the pcv tube on the eco engine?

I don't know about the speedo gear.

The wire to the IP might have been for a cold-start system. Pics of the IP could be helpful.
Have a nice day.
