tranny rumble
Heard a new noise from my 5 spd the other day. It only happens on compression; when I put power to the motor, the noise goes away. But when coasting down there is a noise like gears rumbling against each other. I drained the oil and it was rather ugly; kind of like a water/oil mix, dirty looking. There were a few small metal pieces that came out, and with the tires off the ground, and turning the wheels by hand, I can hear what sounds like bearings rumbling in the differential. Hard to tell, really. Otherwise the car drives just fine, and there is no catching of the gears when shifting up or down, just this strange rattling-type sound on compression. Anyone ever run into that?

Re: tranny rumble
sounds like one of the bearings in the diff section of the tranny has packed it in.
the metal bits are probably the cage that held the bearings in place... loading the tranny forces the bearings together and they rub against each other, coasting lifts the load and they separate a bit.

If the diffs going it won't be long before tranny oil starts to leak out the stub shaft seals. You can check for excessive play in stub axles to be sure.

Thanks much for all the advice. It looks now like I will be doing much more as the head gasket blew. Sheesh.

Re: tranny rumble
I`m having a similar rumbling issue ... My trans oil is clean but I found a torn CV boot, and will either replace it or the entire shaft ($20 difference on ebay). Hopefully that fixes it.
Goodluck with the head gasket.

the stubs are spring loaded ... won't get much play showing.
still check the 1/2 shafts for worn CV joints ( can't hurt )
