Oil Dip Stick Tube..... Grommet/Seal?

Post by strokermaverick »

What type of seal is used for the oil dip stick tube, to the block, on the 1.6 N/A diesel? I have put a few shade tree fixes on it but, none of them seem to last more than a few months. I would like to know what the factory or best way to fix this problem is. Thank you for reading and for any replies.

The factory setup has an o-ring (maybe two) held in the bore by a washer.

My 89 just started weeping again too, after a year of silicone sealant instead of the o-ring. The driveway was so nice without the black spots.

Hopefully someone has the part# or dimensions, so I can buy a dozen.
Have a nice day.

All of my Mk. II diesels have Mk. II gasoline tubes and dipsticks because I simply got tired of messing with this seemingly endless problem with the standard diesel tubes.

The gas ones are totally different and need to be slightly bent to use with the diesel pump. But, once you get it in.....life is so much better.

any body have any luck finding out exactly where to get the proper o ring. The one i used worked for a whopping two days. man I dread the idea of having to get that bolt under the ip to grab again. I tried searching autohaus with no luck. How is the one off a gas different?
Thanks.

A tube off a gas (85 to 92) is a straight steel tube with tapered/smaller diameter bottom part which goes into the block fairly hard and stays put and doesn't really seem to leak. You simply have to bend it somewhat forward to clear the pump and bending it takes.....oh.....6 seconds or so. Maybe more if you think about it. The accompanying dipstick is a flat easy-to-read stick instead of the annoying wire long one. The plastic top part of the gas dipstick is usually easily found on parts sites.

As a matter of fact. the replacement gas dipstick (minus the tube is only about 3 or so bucks (before freight). But, to my knowledge, you must find the actual stationary tube in a gasser block.

I can't and won't explain it any more or clearer than this.

sounds like this might be the type that I have on the parts diesel golf. No bracket to ip just come straight out like you describe. But i'm not sure how to remove it. I've yanked and tried to wiggle it free but it seems to want to bend instead of release. Any suggestions?

Generally, they are removed from below (oil pan off).
But, I have used a circular tipped vise grip to carefully grip at the top. Then, use a small hammer to tap-tap on the vise grips.

Yes, they are hard to remove, but that is also why they seal. Hey....nobody said it was going to be easy out west!

great. thanks. I'm guessing when you used the vice grips the engine was not in the car cuz there's not much room in there. When pan is removed I must just have to tap it out huh? & then when installing all it is is downward pressure and it holds tight? I know better than to think any kind of car repairs is gonna be easy but I really am appreciative to talk it over with folx that have more experience than me, before making (more) stupid mistakes.
Thanks again. Niko.
