Some (maybe all) MK1 trannys don't have all the bosses to attach the MK2 shifter linkages.

Getting the tranny code will help tell what's compatible or not.

Guts might be swappable.
Have a nice day.

That AWY has a 0.89 5th - I am pretty sure you can swap in any 5th gear set you find on a forum for sale, I see them a lot.

I doubt it`d be worth going backwards to the 1982 transmission unless it was a rare/popular one like the 7A.

I just swapped a ACH into my 1979 and really like it around town. Seems like the ratio is funny, I find myself entering 4th gear at 40 mph, but it has plenty of RPM left before going to 5th.

Like was mentioned, you'll have a hard time putting a MK1 trany in a MK2.
MK2s fit in a MK1 though.

Wiki says Mk2 hit North America in 85: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vw_jetta# ... 6.3B_1G.29

As noted, there were quite a few MK2s sold in NA.

I had a Caddy pickup with a MK2 tranny... good mpgs.
Have a nice day.

I drive a Jetta, put together from parts of all the A2 years, including transmissions. Gas trannys into the diesel work fine. One of the last I did was to take the 4th and 5th from a 7A and put it into my ACN. Loved it, especially the 3rd, 4th, and 5th range for driving. Had something come loose recently, forcing me to change out the tranny...again. I am not a professional re-builder, with all the great tools, so perhaps I didn't get something adjusted internally properly.

Anyway, I scored an FN tranny from an '82 Scirroco that was had clean oil (no visible metal floating in the oil). Had to fab a different motor mount using the three studs that protrude from the passenger-side of the differential in order to safely mount it into my car, but so far, so good. The shifting is real smooth, and the ratio range works great for my driving. Top end is 70 mph at about 2800 RPM. Mileage stays around 50 mpg. This is a 1.6L TD, no air, and no power steering.

id watch putting gas trans into a diesel. manual trans was made for diesel, gas manual and all automatics were not made for diesel. hense short life of auto trans. the diesel has a lot more vibration going thru drive line and also thru case needing reinforcement.

I have been into these tranny's quite a bit, and see no real difference in them at all. The gears work the same in all, and the construction is the same. One needs to be sure you have good motor mounts, and that all else is tight, otherwise.........no problem.

They are the same only difference is the teeth on the gears inside and the punch they use to stamp the code into the case. Jettaman did you put the .91 fourth into yours? I was contemplating doing that also. I put in a .71 into my can haven't been able to drive it yet though.

Yes, I did change the 4th and 5th from the 7A to my tranny. Was real happy with the progression through the gears, especially being able to cruise at higher speed and lower rpm's.
