Yeah not even near as fine of mesh. And the one I removed was double layered so had all the algae trapped between layers.

Has anyone tried/thought about replacing the under-the-hood fuel filter set up with an in-line universal filter(s)?

I am considering this as a cost saving option and because the vw filter is available locally.

The factory fuel filter is also a water trap type filter. You don't want to run water through your IP, as it will rust things inside and cause a rebuild quicker than if the water didn't go through the IP. At $25 a filter and changing it even once a year, that's a lot cheaper than a professional IP rebuild by a Bosch service center. I'd keep the factory setup, or install a Frantz filter setup. The Frantz filter does trap water, but I don't know if the factory filter does a better job or not.

New fuel filter and injector return lines = back on the road!

Thanks to everyone that posted!

I just bite the bullet and change my fuel filter each year. It's not worth it to try to get extra miles out of it to me. Glad you figured it out.
