mk1 020 into mk2

Post by rayray »

I am trying to get my 1.6l TD from my pickup I recently wrecked into a 1992 Jetta gas donor car with a 5 speed gasser 020 trans. I am having trouble getting the Mk2 rear mount onto the FN 020. I have read through the posts related to this topic on this forum and others. I know that the Mk2 rear mount will not match the Mk1 bolt holes.

What I am curious about, and have not found any answers from forum searches, is whether I can swap just the bell housing/ outer final drive cover on the two cases. Looks like I would have to remove the axle hub and oil seal. Besides that it could just be the case bolts.

I have done nearly every project possible on these VW diesel cars, except for anything that involved opening the tranny, so it is a bit of a mystery besides viewing Bentley drawings.

So.... can I do it? Do the innards of the trannys stay put when you open the case? Will the housings line up? Do I need any special tools.

Also, looking at the gear ratios in the Bentley, it seems the final drive is the gear with the major change between the gasser and diesel. Can just the final drive gear be swapped?

Or...... does anyone have a Mk2 diesel 020 transmission for sale in the Seattle area??

You are looking at alot of work try to swap the bell hosings.
I don't think you could put it back together without having to change shims behind the final drive bearings,..
and that takes a special tool.

It doesn't have to be a diesel.
Many gassers use tranys with good highway gears,.. even MK3s.

If you have a TD everyone seems to love the ACN,.. that never came in a diesel.

There's a lot of info at http://brokevw.com/ which might answer some of your questions. And you could pose your questions to Brian: he seems to be well versed on the intricacies of the 020 transaxles.

I have the trans from the 1992 gas Jetta. Can't remember the code off the top of my head- think it is 3 digit starting with A. I thought that I shouldn't use it because the gearing is different.

Especially the final drive gear looks way off. I was afraid that I would be revving too high at highway speeds. I do a lot of commuting and need that 45 mpg.

Thanks for the info.
I think I will just go with the gasser tranny that I have for now.
I only have my 2wd dodge truck right now and the snow is coming! Need FWD.

Maybe do a tranny swap later........
