so why *wouldn't* you take the whole carrier off to work on the seal? it is hard to get to the bolts?

I left the seal carrier on the engine for a couple reasons. One, you'd have to drop the pan to likely get the oil pan seal back on without it leaking, and two, it likely would require extensive scraping of the block to remove the block to carrier gasket. This last one is the reason why I didn't pull the carrier out because I felt it would take a lot more work changing two additional gaskets just to change one. The front seal is really easy to change while in the car.

on my eco engine I didn't find the gasket to sticl to the block or carrier. no neec to drop oil pan either. Just what I found though could be different for everyone.
