Quantum-man,
No problem. I won't leave you hanging.

ad,
That's a good idea about the calipers. But I'm just 2 bolts and a tranny mount from dropping it out of there.
I'll check it out when before I remove flywheel.
On my rebuilt Bosch starter that I just purchased, the bendix gear turns the same as the other off brand rebuilt starter I had.
Easily one way, a lot stiffer the opposite direction. The gear is not extended out when I do this, but in its resting position.

Small thing, .. probably has nothing to do with it,..
I always bolt my negative cable to the top starter mounting bolt.
I don't trust the metal to alum to metal current path of the trany mount.

I've never seen a ring gear so worn it wouldn't work.

Sorry it's been a few days since I've been able to work on it.
Swapped out flywheels. Now trying to install tranny. I'm having a hell of a time.
If I hadn't done it before, I would say it can't be done.
The drive axle flange on the tranny keeps hanging up on the flywheel. I can't get it past so everything can line up.
If it wasn't there, I think it would slip in no problem. :?
I just don't remember dealing with this before.
If I ever get this stupid thing running again I'm going to watch it fall off a cliff.

I seem to recall something about the flywheel having to be in a particular position for that flange to clear. DOn't remember the details but there may be something in the Bentley or on line somewhere

Yes that's what I need, a flywheel with a big notch in it. The picture in the Bentley is beautiful.
But neither one of my flywheels have that.
It was a real bear getting the tranny out also.
Maybe that's what I need. Maybe both of these flywheels are wrong?

Could I grind out a notch in the flywheel?
Would it throw it out of balance?

I would be really hesitant to modify a flywheel - would probably create a huge balance problem. I remember my 1.5 engine had the notch but don't remember having that problem on my 1.6. It may be a question of just wrestling it to the right place. Make sure the small cover is off on the tranny bell housing - it's held on with 10mm (head size) bolts or maybe screws and it gives a little more clearance. It's been about 8 years or more since I did the clutch on mine and I just don't remember the details. These are always a bear for me to get lined up with the engine in the car and I used an old cut down jeep bumper set across the top of the fender wells to suspend the engine and then used a harbor freight cheapy crank up transmission jack to help position it from the bottom

It's a 10mm and an 11mm bolt.
I've forgotten what kind of car this is but the rear of the trany needs to be lifted high, especially on the MK2s.

Yes I got the little cover off.
I'll try lifting up the end.
It's been a couple of days since I've worked on it.
I'll had to walk away and will come back to it later with a fresh mind and better outlook.

That's great news, and thanks for providing the results.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I've never seen a flywheel so bad it caused problems.
Any pics?

I'll take some pics Sunday and post them.
It didn't look bad to me. Just looking at it, I would say it was good. But what do I know?
All I do know is I took a flywheel that was good, and put it in, and presto it starts.
