Water Pump and Crank Bolt Sizes

Post by 82vdub »

Looking to replace those allen head bolts in my water pump pully and the crank pully with standard hex head bolts. Salt and time has not been good to this type of fastener. This is for an 86 Jetta 1.8L gas, but suspect that they are the same as the 1.6L diesels. Anyone know the size of the bolts for each of these? I didn't find their listing in the forum.

Thanks. I brought an old water pump with me today and will go to the hardware store to see what fits. The length of those little bolts isnt' too long or else they hit the back side of the pump.

It doesn't seem like regular bolt heads will allow you to put a socket on them, room restriction.

That's all I was able to find. I picked some up and will try it. An open end should be able to grab them and turn them a bit, but we'll see. I also looked into stainless steel M8 x 1.25 x 12 allen heads, but they didn't come that short. We'll try what I got and see.

Yea, there's a Fastenall store here in town. I've used them in the past, but didn't think about it this time.

I've ordered lots of bolts and stuff from these guys, they are great for metric stuff.

Here's grade 12.9 allen* head bolts, M8x1.25 in varying lengths

Thanks for the responses. I used a hex head M8 x 1.25 x 12 bolt. The socket just fits on the head, or fits mostly to get it snugged up. I could have gotten the 16mm long bolt and used a couple washers under the head, but this is good for now.
