Suggestions please

Post by dleesel »

I am in the middle of changing out the oil pan gasket on my 85 1.6 n/a golf an I thought I'd ask if there any other things that I should change while I'm at it? Are there any gaskets that you would suggest?

I'm also about to change the cv axle both front left and right and am a little confused as to the inner joint. I saw some that were 4mm and others that are 3.75mm. Any pointers?

Thank you once again guys.

I use the rubber oil pan gaskets.
I think they are normally for a '93 and newer 2.0 ABA gasser block.

I'm not sure what you are saying is different about the axles.

Inner CV joints are either 90 or 100MM (3.75 or 4 inches if I did the math right). All the diesels I have seen are 90mm but I do not have a MKII.

Really!? Thats great news. I just found it and ordered it. Thank you!

About the CV axle here are the two different specs:

Both front left:

Front Left; w/ 4.0" Inner Joint

vs.

Front Left; w/ 3.75" Inner Joint

both of these say there are an exact fit.

You mean, 90mm and 100mm. I don't know of a diesel that had 100mm joints unless someone swapped the transmission. Get me the transmission code and I can tell you what size it needs. It should be on the bellhousing of the transmission, on the bottom.

Should be the smaller size. I'm 99% sure. Quotes from the Scirocco Gear Up page:
Here's a chart of transmission code and axle flanges (A2 transmissions) from the VW parts catalogue. There may be some aaplications missing, butI tried to cover most of them. I did not specify gas vs diesel, but I think as a ROT most gas transmissions in Dijifant applications (ie 100hp and up) are 100mm flanges, while most CIS and Diesel applications (85-90 hp) are 90mm flanges. The obvious exception to this that I've found are of course 85+ Sciroccos and Cabs, and some early A2 Jetta GLs. YMMV.

ACH = 90mm flange. Get the smaller joint.
