ip leaking again??

Post by brettj20 »

like the title states having some more issues with my 83 rabbit diesel, A month ago i put a new ip shaft seal in my pump to fix my leaking problem, all went together smooth with no problems, fixed my problem, Ive only put 50 miles on the car since i replaced the seal and it started leaking again ??? I recheck my ip shaft and i have no "play" in the shaft at all. Maybe a faulty seal?? The car runs fine just leaking diesel everywhere bad.

I`d say the bushing is worn out, and you can`t detect any play because the seal is just tight enough to dampen the shaft movement, then having the belt tightened up, etc pulls it out of shape & opens up the leak.

I`m sure others will have a better explanation, I haven`t had a diesel long enough for this sort of thing to happen.

They almost all have SOME play, I even feel a little play just after reaming new bushings.
So saying you have no play is suspicious.

Maybe you are moving it the wrong way.
It only wears in one direction.
Was the sprocket on when you tested for play?
Was the belt still on?

It is almost certain that another seal is leaking (unless they were changed)... if the mainshaft seal was bad, the others will be too.
Have a nice day.

Search this forum for prothe and read. I've never purchased anything from him, so I can't say, but others have and have posted comments here.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

You will get a good rebuilt pump if you go through Jack (forum owner). His rebuilder is a good guy in my experience.

I`d avoid Prothe also, from what I can see most of his parts are compatible with Bosch pumps, but are actually a chinese knock off of the Bosch pump that is sold on cheap chinese diesel engines & possibly from car parts retailers. Basically a carbon copy with insuperior materials, etc.

Yeah, it's hard to feel mainshaft play without the sprocket on.

I the Seal Lip has worn a groove in the Pump Drive Shaft that can also cause a leak if the even if the Seal is new. If you run your Thumb Nail acrossed the Seal area on My Shaft you can eaily catch your Thumb Nail on it.
