My stepvan gone lite-up lass night

Post by surfcam »

12000 volt power line landed on my stepvan and blew 2 back tires out. The other tires melted the snow and burn the grass and kicked up some dirt. The inside smells like smoke. I think the tires are all toast and maybe some rear end bearings wheel bearings. What else should I look at before the adjuster comes. It's a four cylinder with a bosch pump. Almost like a big rabbit. Maybe a kangaroo.

I'd claim anything that contains a semiconductor... alternator, relays, ECUs, etc.
Have a nice day.

Nearly every part of the vehicle could become part of the path to ground, so all the wheel bearings, suspension parts, and such. Hope this turns out well, but maybe the electronics are fried as TylerDurden says.

You make some good points. Thank's for that. Just glad I wasn't in her when she got charged. That will be a little more ammo for the adjuster.

Entire instrument cluster, stereo, light switches, bulbs, wiper motor(s) & rear window defroster grid could be fried. The spots where chassis & component ground leads terminate may be especially affected and probably need, at the very least, a thorough cleaning. Their corrosion is usually a gradual growing nuisance, but seems to be accelerated by extra power surges or excessive current loads, both of which they have likely just experienced.

Best wishes with the insurance folks, as well as a successful repair/restoration process.

Good to hear you weren't in it. We had one of our big trucks (Freightliner) at work had have that happen. With our driver in it. He was ok, didn't get out of the truck. Although I didn't know how many volts were in that line, but the truck was ok and this is a newer truck (diesel of course) and is loaded with all kinds of electronics. Computer timed injection, electronic speed governing ect. No tire fires or anything so violent. Hopefully it isn't as bad as it seems. Let us know.

Good Luck,
Tom

As you know, I just got a step van this summer.
I've been getting your emails but a mailer deamon when I try to reply.
I told you mine had single wheels on the back and you said you and your wife thought those were,.... "cute",
That's the word you used. Mine isn't one of the real small ones. It's 17ft from the door to the doghouse,.. 17 ft load.

That aluminum body really conducts I bet.
Probably some hot spots where the aluminum body meets the frame.
Sorry to hear about this. I know you've put alot of work into it and have it just the way you want it.

Cool that they have the same VE style pump. One of the selling points for me.

Ya maybe don't park yours under high voltage power lines. Maybe I'll check my profile to see if something wrong.

Or trees. I have a tree to the north or the house that's about to fall over or lose a limb.
I plan to take it down this winter so I'll be at more ease on the windy days.
I think the emails not able to be returned has something to do with trying to send an email to your inbox.
Works better with PMs.

I was using a email that doesn't work any more from my old internet provider. There's a new one on my profile now so it should work now. Sorry about that.

I'm doing back flips to-day. I just settled with the power company and it was very very fair and I get to keep the stepvan for only a 1000 off the settlement. So I'm going to try and resurrect her. She lives maybe? If not I have alot of real nice parts for another project.

I guess are poor Steffy as my wife calls her had pug pulled today and is off to the salvage yard. I try to negotiate the salvage designation off registration (Canada eh no title). This mean the big inspection with alot of unknows on the vechicle. Not worth risk for me anyway when I'm having T4 dreams. But I'm still happy with the settlement because it was caused by a lighting strike comprised wire they didn't have to pay one cent. It's the in the Fortis terms and conditions. So keep your head-up if you get killed by a dropping power line your wife may get nothing.
