Mechanical Head

Post by BlueDog »

The head is removed from the block. I cleaned it up and lapped all the valves because a few were leaking. I re-assembled everything by following the instructions in my Bentley.

Next, I'd like to do the valve lash adjustment with the head on the workbench in the warmth of my basement! Is this do-able? Seams like the cam doesn't want to turn using a wrench on the sprocket bolt.

Hi,
Something is wrong. You should be able to turn the sprocket by hand [just] in a series of jerky moves.
Stiff enough to require use of a leather glove to prevent cuts!
Spanner/wrench better. Vice grips between lobes also.

Be sure to lube contact surfaces, lobes, shims and cam carriers.
Spec; if you have overground the valves, then you have reduced gaps between cam's back of lobes and the shim.
Check shim gaps.

If you have somehow interchanged the cam carriers one may be binding.
Slacken all studs a little to see if rotary motion returns.

If all shim gaps are too tight, then it will be new shims, if they are available, or even come that thin;
or new valves[if they are below limit on their edges];
or as I have done previously; leave shims, and grind required length off each valve stem end.
The benefit of this last method, is come the time you buy new valves, they will drop straight in [maybe]...

i use a 300mm cresent like in the bentley; cam should turn fairly easily with wrench, you may need to check for whats binding. maybe you put a spring in wrong or a valve/spring are hanging.

or you have head unsupported and upright; what i mean is when you turn cam the valve is opening on the weight of the head, not good, either support head so valves have clearance or turn head on its side (ex studs), and have someone hold head steady.

I took everything back apart. Cleaned thoroughly again. Oiled everything again and re-assembled. Works well now. Next is to learn from the Bentley how to set the valve lash. Bought the two tools needed for this.

Measure all gaps between cam and shims 'off lobe'.
They will be fine or too tight.

Spec is 8 thou inlet and 12 thou exhaust.
IMO 4 and 8 are fine for wear limit

Remove each shim, measure and place on a numbered sheet of paper. If shims are differently sized you may be able to swap a few around to get all or most in or near spec.

When you get one last one out of spec, search online for a correctly sized replacement, or do as I said earlier in the thread...
