Anyone know where I can get the seal kit for the advance piston housing?
Thanks,

If you need the seals for the IP, they come in a kit for <$20.
The mainshaft seal is extra (~$18).
You can often get them from your local Fuel Injection shop or diesel shop.

The common philosophy is that if one seal is going bad, the rest are not far behind. I have found it to be true on the IPs I have had.
Have a nice day.

I don't have a bad seal. Just wanted to take a look at removing a shim from the advance housing...

IIRC the advance seals are 30 by 3mm. $0.50 Nothing special needed, as any diesel swelling adds to the seal!

Do I really need to replace them if I'm opening the advance cover?

Replace only necessary, if square profile, and clearly not holding cover away from body, otherwise discretionary.

That o-ring seals outside air from getting to the pump input.
You would know if it leaks by seeing air in the clear fuel line on the output.

Unless your shaft seal was leaking, which, on an old pump is more likely, due to the ingress of dirt scratching the shaft.
As a matter or interest, I have a brilliant book from the 1960's on seals, and it states that a light blemish on a shaft will merely cause a sweating of the seal under pressure, but, a little air kills a lot of vacuum

Yeah, there are more common sources of air leaving the pump when none appears to be entering.
But if there is no air in the line before reusing this o-ring. A sudden appearance of air would mean the old one just wasn't good enough to use again.

Indeed! However if you've never tweeked a small job into a bigger one by touching something on a sidetrack unnecessarily, then you're a better man than I ;o)...

In fact I have a story to tell from last month which is a lesson in this, and a testimonial to the resilience of my Quantum or more specifically my infamous engine.Later...

Rabbit has been back on the road for a couple of weeks. Needs an alignment, but it's doing very well.

I replaced the front struts and mounts, new front wheel bearings and brakes, new cv joint boot and steering rack boot, new rear main seal, replaced the transmission (fluid looked like heavy metallic boat paint) and put all new seals in it including new axle seals, complete clutch kit, new shift bushings and linkage and made a new "orange bushing of death" which is no longer orange.
My buddy made a beautiful 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with a Magnaflow and nice tip. The Rabbit doesn't deserve it, but it's on there!

Runnin' great!

Issues I found during disassembly: front wheel bearings were GONE gone. A very light tap and the spindle fell off the hub! The ears on the brake pads were bent from being installed wrong and the pads were barely making contact with the rotors. The shift linkage was cobbled together with pipe and the pressure plate was mis-aligned.
