210 mm Flywheel & Clutch on a 1.6?

Post by Caerbannog »

Hi all.
So I'm installing a DFQ code transaxle from a '96(?) Jetta, with the fat input shaft in my '82 Rabbit. As I understand it, I need to upgrade the clutch disk from my current 200 mm setup to a 210 mm to accommodate the 24mm 28 spline input shaft. That also means the pressure plate and flywheel need changing.

Has anyone done this recently, and is there a timing mark at the appropriate location for us 1.6l diesel folks? And I understand there are one dowel and two dowel alignment schemes for the pressure plate/flywheel depending on whether it was for a Mk2 or Mk3 application?

My Rabbit was in intermittent storage until recently, and last time I drove it, the clutch got stuck "on". To attend to that, I pulled the trans( a FN, BTW), and since I wanted to attend to worn synchros by doing a rebuild of the trans... and that became a slippery slope. It turns out that since my FN is an older model, there is a bearing (the input ball bearing) that is NLA.

So, I had this DFQ trans in storage with a bad reverse and took it apart and am going to put it back into service after I put new parts in there, stealing the reverse gears out of my FN. I hope I get this done before the snow really flies!

I've put the stronger 210 mm clutch/flywheel on a couple of my Rabbits.
The only problem I had was like you mentioned,.. the timing mark is missing.
I painted one on.
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.
2003 TDI wagon
2000 TDI Jetta.

Yeah, I was afraid that was the answer. So how did you determine the correct location? And are there any useful marks at all?

Yes, it's on the edge of a bolt hole.
I think there is a picture of the spot on vwdiesel.net
