TD Won't Rev

Post by tripseven »

Trying to revive a 1983 Quantum TD. The engine will fire up but wont rev. Idle is rough and eventually dies.

Things I've tried:
Connected fuel primer bulb, squeeze it while giving some throttle and engine revs.
Changed fuel filter.
Cleaned fuel tank screen (gummy as if SVO/WVO was ran) and made sure lines were clear to pump.
Removed fuel line from filter and dunked it in jar of diesel.
Swapped injectors to know good ones.

After trying the above I get the same result...no revs on its own. Any suggestions before I swap in a known good pump? TIA

Hmm...haven't heard of that. Will give it a shot in case something is gummed up in the IP. Thx

Was the car sitting for a while when you got it? When you run diesel purge, you run it straight from the bottle, and you connect the return line to go back to the bottle so it runs on diesel purge much longer than if it sent the return diesel purge to the fuel tank.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

It's been sitting since 2008. Thanks for the heads-up bypassing fuel tank! Tomorrow afternoon I will give it a whirl.

Makes me think the "lift section" of the IP has stuck vanes. PO probably ran veggie and didn't flush out the system very well.

I'd use an electric fuel pump to keep the IP fed while circulating a couple cans of Diesel Purge through the IP (to/from can). Once the DP has been consumed, I'd see if the IP can pull fuel on its own... if not, I'd start the process again, but stop once the engine is running on DP and let the IP sit full of DP for a few days and try again.
Have a nice day.

Couldn't find Diesel Purge...three auto stores never even heard of it. Instead I tried "Power Service/Diesel Kleen/Injector Cleaner & Performance Improver." Recirculated in a quart jar for about five minutes and she stays lit on her own now. Another five minutes and I can rev it w/o primer bulb but not high revs. Used almost all of the solution and shut it down til next weekend. That should give it a nice long soak.

Didn't have an electric pump handy TylerDurden, although that was a great idea! Got a great forearm workout with the bulb lol.

Meanwhile, Amazon is shipping some "Diesel Purge" just in case. Thanks for all the help fellow Dubbers!

I will often clean my rigs with a 3:1 mixture of naptha:ATF. Cheaper than DP. Maybe not as good, maybe better. :D
Have a nice day.

I agree, sounds like the vanes are stuck and the pump isn't pulling fuel.
A clear line coming from the pump would let you see if fuel is moving.

Maybe you can get a vane to move out by using an electric pump to prime the system and revving it high.

Just a follow up on the IP...finally got it to rev w/o manual pressure to the pump but wouldn't rev fully. Then I noticed leaks at the shaft seal and head...predictable after suspected WVO on OEM seals. Now she comes apart for Viton!

Thanks for all the help!!!
