Engine Noise

Post by 8182Rab82Cad »

I need some good ideas to determine what I am hearing. About 10,000 miles ago, I put a rebuilt head on my 1.6N/A which has about 250,000 miles on the block. It has always started without heat in single digit temperatures. A few months ago, it started with an unusual tapping or clicking sound. It got a little quieter after a minute or two so I drove it home. Since then, I took the head off and looked at the valves but saw nothing obvious. I re-assembled the engine. The sound is still there but is not too obvious until the rpm is up. The other day I was driving it going down a hill at 25 to 35 mph and noticed the sound disappeared when I was coasting but came back when I started giving it fuel again. (Prior to removing the head, I checked compression and it was good if not a little high. )

Is the the valves or the block? Is there a good test to try?

Did the enging get timed by the book? Injectors matched? Piston clearance to head checked?
Have a nice day.

Could be an injector if it only sounds when fuel is applied.

It was timed by "the book". Glow plugs were replaced with rebuilt ones.

Better to time it by ear than by the book.
