1.6d performance mods??

Post by Mathius »

So I know this isn't the section to post this, but activity seems a bit slow around here.
I'm wondering about air box mods to allow better airflow, using a stainless header for gas motor, and IP mods you might be able to do at home?
Or where I could pick up a performance pump??

I have a hair brained idea to make a ram air scoop to force air into the factory airbox. Then cutting up the box cover to make it work.
But I've never seen anyone else do it. I have to wonder why?
The header idea I found info on. But don't know if it would be worth anything installing it on my 1.6, other than being able to run a 2.5 exhaust.. Maybe freeing up a few extra MPG, and lowering EGT's so you could crank it up a bit more..

I'm just looking for advice on this, or more information on it all.

Thanx. 8)

I've thought about a hood scoop too.
The NA airbox is right there under the hood,... I even have a few spare hoods ,.. but I haven't tried it yet

Well at least I'm not alone.. lol
Had had the idea of a Subaru hood scoop, in a ram air type fashion..

What's your take on the header?
I still think the added airflow, and opened exhaust could help lower EGT's so you could possibly turn it up a bit more??
I worry about turning it up to much, and hurting the motor.

I don't think the ram air will help much. Pressure increase is small. Exhaust is similar... not much to gain.

You can crank up the fuel without much risk on an NA, it just makes soot tho, not much power gain.

The way to get more mojo is a turbo. Sure, it costs some time and money, but you actually get some palpable results for your efforts.
Have a nice day.

I got to thinking here today...
Could you use a lightened flywheel, and clutch setup for a 1.8 on the Diesel?
A lightened flywheel would be a great addition to these anemic turds. If the ones off a gas motor would work..

Light flywheel is a mistake on a diesel-4... the engine has plenty low-end torque to launch, and the mass of the flywheel smooths out what would otherwise be a self destructing rattlebox.

+1 on getting a turbo if budget is not a problem.

Re. exhaust: Not earthshaking, but definitely found noticeable power gains on 1.6NA VW Dasher by changing its manifold & pitiful 1 1/8" dia. exhaust system to the manifold & downpipe (approx. 2 1/4" dia.) from a VW Fox 1.8L gasser. The 1.8L manifold's runners seemed to have larger i.d., and from the Fox downpipe, 2 1/4" pipe carried the exhaust to a short fiberglass muffler & side exit. IDK if a later Golf 1.8L gasser exhaust manifold would have similar benefits for a 1.6NA Golf or Jetta. The Dasher's fuel mileage may have improved slightly(?); hard to know once even a little more power is discovered!
