IP timing 91 jetta na

Post by jersey36 »

I,m sure this has been discussed many times, but I'll apologize for not being able to read all 93 pages of posts at this time. Having just replaced the timing belt and tensioner the day before driving from NJ to Florida, I did not have the tool to time the inj. pump. The book (Bentleys) calls for .90 +or- .02 for setting and that .83 to .97 is ok if just checking timing. I always thought this was a fairly large range for something I thought would be more precise. I'm not looking to reinvent this wheel, just opinions on which side I should lean to. Economy is my priority, if no one has found any improvement by experimenting, than .90 it shall be. Thanks and a Happy Veterans Day, Bob

Most people say more advance is better

Whenever you find the time read the thread in the faq about internal fuel pressure. Good (balanced) injectors and proper fuel pressure is important for fuel economy. Fuel pressure has a big effect on actual timing when the engine is running

Since the timing is somewhat determined by the injector breaking pressure,..
the easiest way to have the timing set properly is to find a shop with a pulse detector and have them set it to 12btdc.
The timing light should shine on the center of the square standout.
Otherwise it's set, test drive, repeat until perfect.
Yeah the dial gauge just gets you in the general area so it will start.
