(Pa)Tina needs a new power plant

Post by Fatmobile »

Sooo I just got back from a trip to California in the VNT-15 Rabbit (Pa)Tina.
On the way back the engine started leaking profusely.
I thought it was the oil filter flange so I replaced that gasket and made sure the dip stick wasn't leaking.
That wasn't the problem. It developed a hairline crack in that area.
As a quick fix I cleaned it up good and put JB weld on it with a roughed-up piece of steel glue to the top of that. Well that slowed it down but I guess the crack extends over toward the curved area above the oil pump.
Looks like I'll need an engine swap.
I was given an eco diesel hydro block that has no ridge and lately was given a hydrolic TD head (see the triangles on the prechambers?) that will fit it. Lucky me.
The head has a few problems:
One cylinder had something fall into it,.. maybe a glow plug tip so there are a few bumps,.. but they don't look all that bad.

Other problem is more difficult to see. The head is warped just over 8thou.
But take note there are no cracks between the valves, not even small cracks.
So I'm going to get the head bent back straight for $50,.. and maybe surfaced but probably not.
Then I'll be swapping all the good internals over to another 12mm block I have. Basically $80 to be bored. If the free engine doesn't work well the second will.
I have had a couple people call me to give me free stuff from their garage cleanouts. Folks had so many parts stored that they would never use/need.
I came home with 2 rabbit loads,... which can be alot with no seats installed, ha. So if anyone needs parts let me know.
I also got a $40 ACN trany that I've been wanting to try so this is it's chance.
These are the last 2, 1.6D blocks I have laying around. So it'll be nice to find a running home for them.

Curious... i get why the head has to be bent into specs... but why at that point, wouldn't you resurface it?

The prechamber outputs get sharp when you surface them.
I also believe the head bolts will pull it down flat if it's close to straight.
If it's at all warped, if they don't get it bent exactly straight and I bolt it down; the cam will rock once it's bolted to the head.
Not surfacing it keeps the cam and head surface parallel.
