Turn signals not working.

Post by diesel freak »

!986 Golf Diesel turn signals not working but the hazard lights work. Bulbs are all good, the green light comes on the cluster but will not blink. Wondering if it could be the relay except the hazard lights blink and I think it runs off the same relay as the turn signals. Could the relay still be bad? Also was thinking it may be the turn signal arm. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

I'd ensure the connections are tight on the lever assembly and the back of the hazard switch. All the wires go through the hazard switch.

Could be the relay... did the signal bulbs get replaced with LEDs? they might not draw enough current to heat up the flasher unless all four are on.
Have a nice day.

With engine off, key in "run", you should be able to hear relay clicking, or not, and tell which side of the relay the problem is. I think it could still it could still be the relay. I would think hazards and turn signals would use different parts of it.
In my mk 2s, all the contacts in those white fusible links in the engine compartment are going to crap and account for most of my lighting fails.

Is the blinker is on when the green indicator is on? Just not blinking?
That would scream relay

I'm thinking bad contacts on the switch,..
the vortex might be a better place for this question since gassers had the same setup and there are many more electrical experts on there.
More likely someone on there has run into this.
A search over there might even come up with something,.. it seems like i've heard of this problem before.

I may have had the same fail, just didnt test the hazards. Golf stopped signaling, light and indicator would just stay on. Swapped relay, worked.
... after a few days of "manual" signaling

the turn signals on my 86 Jetta sometimes get wonky if the hazard switch is activated. Then it takes some fiddling with the hazard switch to get the turn signals working properly again.
