I think so.
It's hard to believe a reservoir cap would cause a blown head gasket before it blew a radiator or coolant reservoir.
It still starts rough when not plugged in but I sent it home with him.
He'll clean the reservoir and see if any more oil gathers there.

I pulled all the glow plugs and tested them.
They are all glowing in 6 seconds.

I'll probably put another engine together this winter,
test it then put that in his truck next year.
I'd like to put the head on another engine and see what happens.

He called today and said it started just fine at 58F.
Maybe the ride home cleaned out an injector.

The tragedy truck continues.
He did a compression test.
490 on 3 cylinders and 350 on #1.
I took it back apart and cylinder #1 was scored bad.

So that pop going down the hill was probably a head gasket blowing again.
Made it home parked it and went to start it the next day and one cylinder was bad.

So looks like the high pressure in the cooling system shoved soapy water into cylinder #1.
Washed all the oil away.
Started it back up ran it into the shop to change another head gasket.
Figured it was #4 again.
But all the cylinders still looked good after this short drive,..
at this point I still didn't realize it was the coolant reservoir cap causing all these problems.

Still had one cylinder bad when I started it after this head gasket but smoothed out.

Second over pistons so the block can't be bored again. It's trash.
Along with one ruined piston.

Fortunately I just bought a stash of engines.
Two 1.6s, one is 12mm with pistons that hit the valves.. and about 2 1/2 TDIs for $100.
Also got the vaned vacuum pump I was looking for.

So these pistons crank and rods, etc are getting swapped to another engine.
They originally came from my 1.6 Rabbit that had an external crack form on the front of the block
near the oil pump and was bleeding oil.
I've been looking for a set of new oversize KS pistons for him but no luck.
Found one new 2nd oversize KS piston.
So that's the plan.
Bore another block and put everything in that.
He's paying for it.

Everything wrong with the truck is sorted out.
No more gasoline in the tank and a good coolant reservoir cap.
It was running great after a short warmup.

Of course with hindsight I wish I hadn't offered to help get this truck running.
I'd have a great block with 490 on all cylinders ready to swap into one of my cars.
And all the time could have been put into my many projects.
But that's spilt milk.
I can't abandon him now and we all learned something from it.
It should be a good runner in about a month,.. depending on the machine shop time schedule.

crazy a stuck rad cap could blow a HG.
Duel rad caps would be sweet. Mine had that, but I modified a vanagon cap to make an overflow to the reservoir.
Back to just one cap
Made it run a lot cooler, I may have some issues.
