MK4 TDI clutch shuttering. Time for change.

MK4 TDI clutch shuttering. Time for change.

Post by Fatmobile »

My MK4 Jetta has her wheels in the air and the trany out.
The clutch was shaking the car when taking off and didn't seem to want to completely disengage between gears.
had to kind of rev match to get it to go into gear.
When I took it apart there were about 10 cracks in the pressure plate and a piece of the throwout bearing laying in the bottom of the bell housing.

I bought a parts car last year.
They put a new valeo clutch in it, and new control arms,...
then put it in the ditch on it's head in a snowbank 2 months later.

I'll be using that clutch.
My first dual mass flywheel install.
I thought the crank bolts would be the same as earlier ones. Nope.
They are round and use the same size XZN bit as the headbolts, so I just ordered up a couple sets of those.
Rear seal was seeping oil so that got changed, have to change the whole carrier on the MK4.

Hardest part was getting the trany away from the block.
That axle flange like to hang up there.
I keep the axle low until I get the front pulled away,
then lift it up in the back to clear the tin block cover cutout.
I had the trany hanging from an engine hoist, that made it easier.
Not looking forward to having to wrestle it back in, it'll be good to have it done.

Got the trany back in.
Those little triplesquare bolts are so shallow the tool needs to be in great shape.
Very little of the tool sits inside bolt head.
That goes for the flywheel-to-crank bolts too and they get torqued pretty tight during that last 1/4 turn.

Everything else was a breeze.
I seem to have the trick of finessing the flange over the flywheel then dropping the bell housing behind the power steering line figured out.

Still need to connect the axles and shift linkage.

Up and running smooth again.
Had to pull the lower motor mount "dog bone" to change the clutch.
There were mounds of crap stuck in the frame behind it.
Had to sweep, vacuum and clean everything out then spray corrosion inhibitor in there.
