Speedometer Drive Gear

Post by diesel freak »

Where is the speedometer drive gear located? My speedometer stopped working and I think it might be the cable or the the drive gear. Plan on replacing both since my speedometer was recently rebuilt.

Speedometer gear is inside the transmission on the rear behind the shift arm. Held in with one bolt.

Make sure you don't drop that little bolt inside the trans when you're messing with that either.

If you yank the speedo out,
you can loose the plastic gear inside the trany.

speedometer gear

Post by diesel freak »

Bought a cable for $23 & the gear for $25. Pulled the cluster and it looks as if the end of the cable broke, the needle is much shorter than the new cable. Attempting to remove the drive gear but the nut holding it on to the transmission is rusted and will not budge. On top of that it seems to be a 11mm. My socket sets are 9,10,12,13 so I will have to go buy an 11mm. Letting the bolt soak in liquid wrench and off to find an 11mm socket. Wish me luck. :(

11mm = 7/16"

Smack it first,
if you have to set a long bar on it...
