what about for an Aftermarket tack can it go straight from W alternator to tach?

no a converter is required. If you search for user VWCADDY and look in the links folder I believe he has plans/diagrams or at least a discussion on his website for doing that

and it comes with an Alternator adapter that easily hooks up on the outside without an expensive adapter or opening up the alternator to reach that signal wire.
