Alternator mounting

Post by Sage Root »

I posted some of my history with my 82 westy with a 1.6 turbo diesel in this topic. viewtopic.php?t=10205

The guy that I bought the van from said he installed a 100 amp alternator in the van and had to jerry rig some of the mounting brackets. The mounting hardware that he came up with does not hold up well to the vibrations from the engine, and some of it has broken.

My question is, does anyone have a few decent photos of what a stock alt. and bracket setup is supposed to look like?

My current setup has a tensioning bar along the top (kind of like an old Ford or something). I am thinking that the tensioning is supposed to happen in the water pump pulley like the old air cooled VW engines did it on the alt.

I have a Bentley manual that I am sure would show this, but it is loaned out to a friend that is out of town for a while.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
