Hello I just bought a 1991 golf with the 1.6l diesel and I have question about a green dash light that flickers on and off every so often.
The prior owner thought it was concerning the hitch light recepticle I have searched many forums and can not find what it represents.
the light is to the right of the yellow glow plug light and directly below the red battery light on the speedo cluster. any ideas? My '86 f250 has a water in fuel light car is of German Spec

I moved this post to the general fora.
At least over here, the TDI doesn't come in a '91.

Sorry I can't help identify your light.
Sounds like a turn signal light.
Only one I can think of with that color.

On my '82 (A1), the GP light is down by itself, just blank lights to each side:

Not sure of the setup on the later models.

Is it not labelled?
It must be some kind of assessory. I thought towing light was elsewhere...

Yeah, must be a European thing.... if you can post a picture of your cluster it may help.

This is the schematic for a Quantum gasser. Following the unused LED socket, it ends up two places to the left of the yellow line...
It's [in this case; a Handbrake warning light]; if I'm reading that correctly

Check the adjustment on the little switch under the hand[parking]brake

As stated, on a Quantum, bottom, far left was reserved for an optional extra light for handbrake left on AFAIK

Does it come on if you apply the handbrake?

Whilst occasional flickering is often a parking brake thing, I may have swapped left for right, and the spot is for choke. I have a diesel one somewhere but cannot find it at the mo.

A few thoughts come to mind.

Since the LED isn't labeled, maybe a previous owner could have removed the blank LED and custom made something to alert the owner to something going on? Or, your vehicle could have an option that for some reason the correct dash plaque wasn't installed, or someone swapped out the instrument cluster/plaque for another one. If you got a European Bentley manual, it should indicate what each LED is for and maybe it will show what this could be used for. Emissions for a catalytic converter system on the diesel?

I found an American issue, diesel Jetta 'map' like the above UK gasser one, and it leads to the same spot, which I now name as LED Frei, meaning spare. It is on the third terminal from the left [right hand terminal block] [as viewed from behind the instrument cluster]!
Trace that wire, by finding it's colour code
