Rubber Valve Cover Gasket: Studs?

Post by avocado »

My new, rubber, one-piece valve cover gasket came with two different sets of studs: one long and one short.

I'm replacing a cork gasket on a 1984 1.6 TD engine (jetta).

I assume that I need to replace the studs that are currently in the head, but which studs do I use? The short ones look more like the correct length, but...any clues?

Thanks!
Currently working on shoehorning a 1.6 TD out of a 1984 Jetta into a 1971 VW Camper (Hardtop)

There should be the right number of small ones and maybe 4 of the long ones.

I sometimes use the long ones for the waterneck that goes to the heater,
the metal coolant line bolts to the lower one,..
grounds can hook to the upper stud.

use the short ones for the VC if there are enough of them.

i like to put them in with high strength thread locker to keep them from backing out when removing the nut.

the rubber gasket is great-- off and on many times and no leaks if your cover is not dimpled. i swapped covers from a spare motor as my old one leaked even with rubber gasket.

rubber vavle cover gasket

Where did you get a rubber vavle cover gasket? I have checked around my area and all area cork. Bummer. I used to use rubber gaskets on the old 292 Ford V8 back in the old days. They were super.

ask for a G40 (compressor style instead of turbo engine) the valve cover was usually a cast aluminum unit .....

G60 engine
1990 corrado
I think even NAPA can get them.
Fits the Rabbit.

Might not come with the studs,.. that's usually the upgrade kit that has those.

Long set screws work better anyway,.. because they screw in with an allen wrench.

Jack, our forum sponsor, can get you rubber valve cover gaskets.

Just a heads up -- I was pleased with myself for getting the "upgrade" G60 rubber gasket kit and merrily installed the longer studs from the kit.

And then drove it to find my new gasket was leaking. Cleaned, tightened, drove some more. Still leaking. Arggh!.

After some head scratching, I determined that the nuts holding the valve cover were bottoming on the threads on the studs without quite squishing the gasket enough to seal, though it was close.

Rather than locate the shorter studs, now lost, I added some washers. A little inelegant, but effective.

Does any one know whether the G60 uses cast aluminum valve covers? They must be thicker than the stamped steel ones on a 1.6.

I know for a fact that the Corrado had a nice looking aluminum valve cover or something of that sort. Some people put them on their Diesels.

You would be correct. :D

When I put mine on I used the existing studs and removed the metal spacers from the new rubber gasket in the upgrade kit.

No leaks.

I tossed the spacers and the studs that came with the kit into the spares can.

I actually like Fatmobile's idea of removing the studs and using allen headed cap screws.

As much as I hate allen headed cap screws, I think in this application they would excel at their duties.

...and they don't have the threadless center section that the nuts can bottom out on,
like previously mentioned.

This is a healthy idea. Any idea what size they are? m8x1.0?

I just ground off the centre torque limiting section
on the old studs and bought some stainless steel
acorn (dome) nuts.
