Wrist pins dont fit in new bushings?!

Post by tylernt »

So, I just pressed new wrist pin bushings into my connecting rods, but they are too small for the wrist pins! I know you're supposed to heat up the pistons to 140°F in an oil bath, and when I do that, the wrist pins do fit the pistons -- but they still won't go into an 140° connecting rod bushing. Main reason? The wrist pins measure .944" and the bushings are only .924"! Why are my bushings .020" too small?!

I'm using the 069105431A wrist pin bushing which is the correct part as far as I know. Help?? My Fox just died so I have to get my Jetta put together ASAP. :(

it is pretty common to have to have new wrist pin bushings reamed to fit... something a machine shop should do. bring the rods+bushings into a shop along with your wrist pins. if the shop will take a small job, it shouldn't be too much money.

What Dan said.

It is critical to have then reamed and honed true and square so don't even try to do it by eye.
Shouldn't cost much to have it done by a machine shop. Just be sure to take the wrist pins with you so they can size them to fit.
Once done be sure not to mix and match them, i.e. keep the same pins/pistons and rods group matched.

Pin bushings typically come in a ream to fit (means ream and hone), or hone to fit.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I usually have them balanced while they are at it.

and check the big end for roundness.
