vanagon transmission input shaft play

Hello, I just dropped the engine from my 82 vanagon diesel and found that the transmission input shaft has quite a bit of play. If I hold the end of it I can wiggle it say 1/8 inch. Transmission seemed to run and shift smooth. Should I be worried? Thanks, Paolo
