I did the same thing this weekend to get rid of my car's rear sag issue. I had replaced the rear shocks/springs, and still had some pretty bad droop.

I welded the sleeves to an exact fit and then slid them on to the shock.

MK1 suspension lift

got better springs all around, just about any rabbit spring is better than the stock S1 ones.
New shocks and the springs, the whole thing cost less than $200 including the cheap spring compressor from HF, The shocks were rockauto closeout deals.
I got ACDELCO 45H1090 front springs. They were harder to compress than the old ones but spring compressor managed to reach.
on the rear I put MOOG CC201 springs and put spacers under the spring perches
The dia of the shock is a an odd size so it's hard to find a pipe that fits perfect. I had some 2" OD thick walled pipe so I used that. It was loose to fit so I cut out a slit with a grinder until it closed to the right size, then welded it.

The spacers were just a little over 2" tall

just made some roof rack pads
6' piece of plumbing pipe insulation foam tube from homedepot (cut in half) and some polyester pant legs cut then sloppily sewn to fit. $3
It'll be interesting to see how long they last.

Also got a bike fork mount from ebay. Lot of wind resistance potential going on here....
