Front wheel bearings

Front wheel bearings
I replaced the drivers side axle and tightened down the axle nut and now the hub won't turn. I can back the nut off and it turns easy again. I pulled the housing off and bearing feels tight with no slop. They turned easy before I loosened the nut when I pulled off the old axle. Bad bearing? I'm confused.

Re: Front wheel bearings
Sounds like it - some grind them down to eliminate the interference

Re: Front wheel bearings
I'll check out the strut carrier interference in the morning.
What clips are you referring to? Thanks.

Re: Front wheel bearings
I think you replaced the whole axle, not just a CV joint. If you did the whole axle, there is no clips.
There's two different size axle flanges on the splined shaft (that sticks through the axle bearing). If you get the incorrect size (too large), the flange doesn't seat itself properly inside the wheel bearing/housing. If it's too large, when you tighten down the axle nut, it tightens agains the wheel bearing/housing. Some grind down this lip so it will slip inside the smaller area, and some have just returned the shaft to get the proper one. Diesel cars have the smaller flange, and the 16V and GTI's have the larger flange axles.

Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

Re: Front wheel bearings
Sorry I read the title that says front wheel bearings thought maybe the bearing was not pressed in all the way.

Re: Front wheel bearings
I didn't even think of that. I wasn't in the frame of mind that somebody might learn from me. I'm the one asking the dumb questions. From now on I will shoot pics of repairs. Thanks.

Re: Front wheel bearings
Relax it is a simple mismatch (very common)...Tell us more about model car. and shaft,,,then we can advise..
IMHO grinding is OK;
hagar
PS : it is all in SAGA.

Re: Front wheel bearings
Exactly what part is ground off?
I thought the mismatch was in the diameter, or are there other possible errors?
I seem to see this when subbing Jetta parts on my Quantum when looking for bargains on Ebay.
I thought there was also a spline tooth number error possible too

Re: Front wheel bearings
I wish I took a pic. I don't know if I can describe it well enough.
It was the drivers side axle that I replaced with one I got at local auto parts store. I was in a hurry This is on a 1980 Caddy. I put in a 1983 1.6 with 5-speed. During this process I had the original axle tided up. Well it got loose and the ball bearings fell out and I couldn't figure out how to get them back in. So for me it was easier just to replace the axle. When I bolted it up, the hub wouldn't turn, like I described before. So I pulled it all apart without removing the axle from the tranny. I just let it hang. I took my 4 1/2'' disk grinder and went around the flange that was tightening up to the wheel bearing housing. Probably took 1/8'' deep, 1/2'' wide, at a 45 degree angle. When I put the shaft back into the housing, nothing was touching, so I torqued the axle nut and all was good. Hope this helps somebody. I can kick myself for not taking pics.

Re: Front wheel bearings
When I had to do this,
The tapered section on the axle had to be ground down very little.
Easy to see where it was rubbing.
