Stainless Steel Exhaust System

Post by wewantutopia »

Hello All. So my less than 3 year old exhaust system (muffler and tail pipe) rusted off. I'm thinking of going the stainless steel route so I don't have to worry about the system again. Of course the normal places (merlins, midas etc) don't carry a stainless steel system for an 86 diesel Jetta. Has anyone done this? Does anyone carry a complete system?

How about piecemealing it together? My current muffler is 16" x 8" x 3.5" with 2" pipes. Would something like this work: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shop ... in&id=8997 ?

Any ideas or help would be great, thanks!

Mine is mostly stainless steel:

Straight lengths of 2" tube plus sections of 2" s/s flex tubing. Has held up fine over the years, have had parts of the s/s tubing used on several vehicles for about 20 yrs. now and aside from a little surface corrosion, the s/s is in almost new condition. I think I spent around $200 for the rigid and flex tubing and muffler back in the early '90s.

While I can't comment on the stainless exhaust, I'm wondering if you got a "steel" exhaust system when it was replaced. Most places these days use aluminized steel pipe because it lasts a LOT longer than standard steel pipe and nobody wants the steel pipe anymore. I think if you got an aluminized steel exhaust system on the car, you would be pleased. It should last for many, many years - well over a decade, IMO.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

Sorry, but if you only got 3 years out of your exhaust system its a real POS.

I always upgrade to a Aluminized Steel exhaust system.

I had a custom 2.5" Aluminized Straight Piped system installed on my Jetta last year. Still looks great and was cheaper than stock at only $200. That included everything welded, no U clamps.

Stainless is expensive. My neighbor just spent $2800 on a Stainless system for his Mustang!
