Stipped Head Bolt...HELP!!

Post by Furgonzo »

Hi,
I am in the middle of pulling my head (1.7 KY engine) to replace the gasket and, upon loosening the head bolts, found one with ZERO traction. The star bit just spins freely. Any sage fixer out there with a solution? The rest of the bolts were barely tight (jackass mechanics!!), so I am hoping it won't take that much juice to get it loose. I imagine these are hardened steel, so beating it with a cold chisel seems futile - I tried briefly and it just bounced off.
Anyway...any thoughts would be huge.
Thanks!

by "spins freely" , do you mean the top of the bolt that the bit fits in is stripped?

if so , just hammer out a 4" nail till its flat... cut the end of the nail off flush ... put it in the stripped bolt head first, then pound the bit in beside it ... this should tighten the fit enough to get the stripped bolt out.... then buy a new bolt

cut the top off the stripped bolt, cut a slot in the bolt head and use it as a guide pin when you change the head gasket..... use a screw driver to remove the "guide pin" after wards.
