Aftermarket Tach or used factory setup

Post by olpos »

Can i buy an aftermarket tach for this 1982 Vanagon diesel.
First, I think i would hook it up to the back of the alternator, but which pin or wire do i hook to.
Second,do i set the tack to 4 cyl :?:
Last, can someone recommend a brand or do i look at the junk yard for a certain year and car.
Thank you :)

Check out Tiny Tach on line. It's a digital tach about $100 that is piezoelectric and simple - the sensor mounts on an injector line. Only requires that connection and +12V. I have one and find it to be perfect for my application - and it's small and just sits in my instrument cluster.

The tiny tach is nice if you like a digital tach.
A gasser tach can be used with the "W" terminal on the alternator,
I think Dakota Digital has an adjustable interface to connect the two.
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.
2003 TDI wagon
2000 TDI Jetta.

You need to use a tach from an early vanagon 84 85 era. The later tachs out of the box will not work with the Dakota Digital device off of the W terminal. I have tried.
