Greetings and air intake placement question

Hi all
I've recently purchased an '87 syncro westy hightop joker 1.9td (wow, mouthfull)
The person that did the installation has placed the air intake mouth/filter directly behind the licence plate swing down latch. As such the conical filter rubs on one of the wheels of the serpentine belt. My question is:
what is ideal placement?
would it be too long of a stretch to have the intake and filter go all the way to the passengers side of engine bay behind battery at the bottom of the air channel?
Many thanks
I am looking forward to wading through all the info here.
Pics to come when I figure out how
