Injector Pump Bracket Question
On my 1.6 IP bracket, there are two holes on the top with welded on nuts. The bottom IP hole is just, well a hole. The bentley manual looks like there should be three welded nuts.
Anyone have guidance?
Either way, I know that spot is a pain.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
I have three nutplates on the 1.6 I rebuilt....
ps: can anyone see what rookie mistake I made during the reassembly?

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
On the later ones, I do believe there is no 3rd welded nut. The bottom bolt is a stud welded or attached to a small bracket, you have to put a nut on it. The top two bolts thread into the bracket. The earlier design was far superior, IMHO, as I never had any issues with it. However with the later A2 design I've actually accidentely overtorqued the bottom and ended up breaking things.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
If that motor is going into a transverse mount (Rabbit/Golf/Jetta), the stud for the belt tensioner should be left out, as you'll never get a tensioner on with it in place.fj40dave wrote:

That, and hopefully your crank is at or near #1 TDC (from the cam orientation). "Mr. Valve, please meet Mr. Piston. Mr. Piston, I present Mr. Valve".
P.S. Looks like a nice job on the glowplug pimping.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
Well....nuts I guess. Mine doesn't have the third welded and it didn't appear that one used to be there. I don't have any bracket with a stud welded to it either. I grabbed a metric bolt and planned on making sure I got the clearance right and then putting it on with a nut. You can access the head via the holes in the IP pulley.
Thanks for the great photo.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
No the stud isn't welded to the bracket, its welded to a short piece of thin metal that goes in the bottom IP hole and connects up to the top where a bolt goes through. Too hard to explain. Its not part of the IP bracket, its part of the hardware that holds the IP into the bracket.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
Another variation is one welded nut at the front and two bolts (or studs) held by bent metal brackets:
One bracket reaches over the top, the other down to the bottom:
Even those are a pain to align when replacing the IP.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
Yeah ,thats the setup I was taking about. Been a while since I touched it.
Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
Couldn't you just take the IP mount plate off, weld a nut to it, and have a "fix"? (I think it's what I would do.....not having the wisdom others have here)Caerbannog wrote:If that motor is going into a transverse mount (Rabbit/Golf/Jetta), the stud for the belt tensioner should be left out, as you'll never get a tensioner on with it in place.fj40dave wrote:

It's going in a 1980 Dasher....front wheel drive, but the engine/tranny are installed like a rear wheel drive vehicle.
No one has caught the goof I did....yet! It was an easy fix, and very obvious once I installed another item that sit's to the drivers side.
Here's a link to photobucket on the whole process so far. At this point, the lighting system is the biggest problem.....short to ground somewhere in the headlight/parking light system.

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
If you end up substituting a bolt anywhere among those three spots, make SURE that the bolt you chose is only long enough to secure the nut and really no more.
Why? Because as the engine/pump build rpm, the pulley on the pump is actually drawn toward the pump with inertia. And if you have a bolt remotely too long, it will ground out on the back of the pulley (at speed) and destroy the shaft/bushings in your pump. Don't believe me? Where would you lke me to send the pump for inspection?

Re: Injector Pump Bracket Question
Yeah, that's an old 1.5 bracket,.. the alternator bracket will have to match it so they can bolt together correctly.
It is a pain to get a bolt under the pump so they made it so a nut from the sprocket side will hold it in place.
