Hello guys and or gals. I have a chance to purchase a 2001 Jetta TDI with 250,000 miles for $2700.00. It has lost reverse. As far as I know, it just quit going in to reverse. It has ALL forward gears. Is there anything other than catostrophic failure, that would cause it not to go in reverse, such as a censor or something? Thank you in advance for any replies, Charles.

The newer autos are complete junk. Usually only get 150,000 out of them. Usually it is the forward gears, but I would suspect similar for the reverse. Most with autos usually get a manual to swap rather than replace the auto. Cost is about the same usually.

No reverse is one of the common failures of the 01mfirst tranny, they are one of the worst modern auto trannys made, and they usually cant be rebuilt to last more rhan 30000 miles.

The good news is, the automatic cars have 11mm injection pumps, so once you complete the 5-speed swap (and you should), you will have a great platform to modify. Stick some injectors from a car equipped with a manual transmission and you'll make more power.

If you need help swapping to manual, let me know. There is also a great thread on another forum that details the swap, though it is best supplemented with some qualifiers, as not all of the information is correct.
