I found a used but refurbished rack on vortex today for 75shipped now I just need the u joint and some tie rods and bushings and I'll be good to go. reason I decided to do it is I have the engine out of my car for a swap and figured I might as well considering I run a power rack as manual right now and it is just ok.. Where did you end up finding one?

Local guy had a junked out TD jetta with a manual rack in it. I bought a new rack, new tie rods, for like, 200 bucks I think, and he sold me the joint and boot for 35 and put it all on for me.

You'll also need anothre U-clamp that secures the joint to the subframe, the P/S rack only uses one. The manual rack uses 2.

Coke, how did you line up the steering shaft and determine how to get the tie rod centered or equally adjusted?

I didn't. My mechanic did. :P I know he set the toe with a tape measure. Ballparked it. He said to get it aligned, but it tracked straight so I never messed with it.
