heater motor problem in my 82 westy diesel

does anyone know if there is an easier way of getting at the heater motor in a 82 westfalia diesel? When I started the engine today and went to turn on the heater fan switch, nothing happened, but a little smoke came out of the vents as though the heater motor was jammed or siezed...hope someone can help? thank you Arrow
