Lower timing cover

Post by tyb525 »

I need the lower timing cover for an '81 1.6 NA rabbit, and the bolts that go with it (or I could get them myself if I know what size they are). Kind of scary driving around without one.

If bbob203 doesn't have one or you can wait for it, the lower covers are readily available online.

Here's one on ebay:

Not sure if its exactly what you need, but there are many out there to choose from. I have been searching for the upper cover and finding nothing but the lower ones.

I emailed the guy selling those, he said they won't work for the diesel engines. I found a guy on craigslist with a large collection of vw parts apparently, he is going to send me one tomorrow. <company name removed by moderator> has them new, but they are pricey, which is why I was trying to find a used one.

These were still available at the dealership last time I checked. $35 and no shipping.
Hard to get a used one in good shape,.. because all the belts running on the outside and in
tear them up,.. or the mounting holes crack out.

I had never seen a mk1 setup before. I am changing over my daily drivers to truck and rabbit and had to dive into this issue.

I just used the lower timing belt cover from mk2 and then put the upper cover on where it made sense and used spacers/bolts/washers to shore everything up. Seems I have clearance all around so I figured I would just roll with it.
