Are all the 1.9's direct inject? I found a 97 Golf from Canada, and it has a 1.9 but with almost the same pump and injectors as my older 1.6!

It is probably an AAZ, sold in Canada but not USA. It is indirect injection, pump is similar, the injectors are a little taller because they are two-stage.

Yes from Canada, and Yes the injectors are taller and 2 stage!
So this is Inderect, like the 1.6?

I had a friend that bought a 97 IDI AZZ. He said, "the TDI's only came with full load and way more expensive so he bought the mechanical". I don't know if they sold the AZZ in 98 and 99. I didn't know that they had two stage injectors. I wonder how they would work in a 1.6. I think they are about 200 pop. That's way more that my Golf 1.6TD is worth.

I tried the injectors in my 1.6 and they did ok?
My biggist question is if this is a direct inject or indirect?

I'm pretty sure the AZZ is indirect injection from different post I've read. Although I never seen the head off one.

So when did it become a direct inject?

I believe 97 would be the first year for TDI's in Jetta's but you could buy a indirect as well. In the US there where some 96 Passat's TDI's but they are kind of rare.

So how do I find out?

All the TDI's will have a plastic cover over the engine that says TDI. Even if the covers gone you will still see bolts sticking up where it attaches. The injection pump has a bunch of wires going to it. Not just one too the pump solenoid. The pump is drive by wire so it doesn't have a throttle cable. Identifying the 1.9 AZZ are discuss in this post.

So what makes the AZZ better than the 1.6?

I wouldn't say the AZZ is better than the 1.6. But it doesn't have more power and tork. So if you have a bus, trailer, or just like the power it for you. The down side is it will burn a little more fuel and the key on the crank which holds the pulley is too shello and does come loose some times. It really needs the TDI up graded one.

So if I go threw this motor get the timing gear from a '90 TDI? What about the head gasket? Bolts?

I believe the keyway in the crank has to be deepened. I think I read about the procedure over at Vortex or the TDI Club. If you don't want to do this as a half way measure you could look for distortion in the key and driven side of the keyway. Maybe the next time you do a timing belt if you want to chance it. I believe the AZZ has the reusable bullet proof metal gasket so if you had APR studs you could take the head off and look any time you wanted at no cost. I really haven't had a lot of experience working on the AZZ's. Most of the information I have pick-up is third hand.

OK but a 2000 TDI motor would have the deeper key on the gear?
