Rebuild JX head or go up to AAZ

Wow, not much traffic on this forum but worth asking...

I'm seeing a lot of oil in the intake, but no noticeable dipstick blowing, so I'm thinking the stem seals are shot, more than the rings. I need to find a new compression tester to make sure, of course.
If the bottom end is good, this should just be a valve stem seal replacment, or a head rebuild... or the chance to move up to an AAZ (please don't suggest a TDI, I'm looking for the simplest way).

What does it have in it now?
Are we talking 1.6?
I haven't heard of a JX head.

Compression can be determined by turning the engine over by hand.

Thanks! JX is the 1.6 turbo that was available in Germany, with the special aneroid on the pump to fit under the deck, and solid lifters.

Turn the engine with a socket on the crank bolt.
If it wants to turn backward near the top of a stroke the compression is 375psi or better.
Turns hard but doesn't back off until 350psi.
turns pretty easy around 325.
