MK2 dip stick and tube on my MK1

I have had 3 MK2 jettas and now I am driving a MK1 1982 pickup as my everydayer. It is much more difficult to check the oil as the MK1 dip stick and tube are much shorter and hard to reach. Is it difficult to change it over to the longer MK2 dipstick and tube?

Mk2 dipsticks are more convenient, but also more prone to leaks.
How about soldering a coat hanger or welding rod to the existing dipstick to extend it?
