Yeah, stock MK1 axle bolts are triple square.
I have seen aftermarket axles with allen heads. Easier to believe than an intake bolt,.. even though it is the right size.

Had 6mm allens on my 77, 79 and 80 rabbits. My Dasher has em. Not sure on my Vanagon, the CVs rarely go bad, since the rear wheels don't steer.

I had those three rabbits (gassers) before I moved to NYC in 86, never owned an XZN driver before then... I remember having to buy the tool in Yonkers.

VW introduced XZN (triple-square) in 78 for headbolts... they migrated into the parts stream to CVs later. Bentley refers to allens as "socket head" bolts and XZN as "12-point socket head" (at least in my Mk1 books).
Have a nice day.

FWIW, the Haynes 81-84 Rabbit manual also refers specifically to allen bolts on the CVs.
Have a nice day.

That's odd.
I rarely see allen head axle bolts on any VW.
The early ones probably had them, until XZN became popular.
The haynes manual saying they are allen head all the way up to '84 doesn't suprise me, ha.

Well that's good info to have. Fortunately I have a decent supply of triple square, allen, and torx and have used torx with a little hammer persuasion to free up stuck and rounded allen bolts.

Today I went by the local VW guy's shop and showed him the bolt. He said to check the intake manifold. Pulled the air box off and sure enough the intake manifold is missing more than just the one bolt. I'm not certain how many bolts it is supposed to have but there sure are a lot of holes that don't have bolts in them. Going to have to explore more this weekend. Sunlight is rare after 6pm here so I haven't been able to get a real good look with working til 5pm and all.

Thanks for all the guesses and input on the mystery bolt. I got the car started and running off of the fuel tank and filter today so it looks as if things are going in a good direction.

I'm sure I'll have more questions for you all as get further in to the car.

Cheers

Oh yeah and the car is a 1980, I was told 1981 but it is indeed an '80. Got all the paperwork the other day and realized that.
