Cooling System Pressure Relief - ???????

Post by Thomas M »

When my cooling system blew it's top, I observed the hot steam venting from a port on the side of the translucent fill bottle. I thought it just didn't look like it was big enough to have a relief valve in it.

Now I read that it's the black cap that has the relief valve built in to it. And the steam is routed out through the port. Is that correct???

So, does that mean, if that relief fails, the system will be over pressurized?? Could that lead to a blown heater core of head gasket, etc.??

Since I'm having all new cooling system components installed, maybe I'd better get a new cap, eh????

Comments, please.

yes the cap is the relief valve. Good idea to replace it if it's really old.
